Purchasing The Right Sofa + 10 Affordable Online Sofas To Elevate Your Space

A sofa is typically the focal point of your living room, and while comfort and function should be a priority, the right sofa can also elevate your living room style. With endless options available online, purchasing a sofa can feel overwhelming and intimidating. To help, I put together a list of 10 affordable online sofas in a variety of shapes and sizes, available in Switzerland, and all under CHF 1500. These sofa selections are sure to elevate your living room design.

As an ex-pat living in Switzerland, I found it particularly difficult to make a sofa selection online. It was hard to know where to find quality furniture, but also (like all online purchases) it’s hard to be certain of color, durability, etc. Other challenges we faced were making sure that the sofa could fit up the stairwell and fit comfortably in our living space without overcrowding it. In Switzerland, it’s common in flats for the living area to be a separate room completely detached from the kitchen, our flat is no exception. We ended up selecting our sofa from Sofacompany and couldn’t be happier. Sofacompany sofas not only tout great reviews but are also customizable and they will ship you 5 free fabric samples (I promise, I don’t work for them)! We selected The Paula model as we needed a slightly smaller couch in our space. The fabric quality is superb and withstands our cat Phinneas’ claws.

Things To Think About When Purchasing a Sofa

  • Size - Do you need a deconstructed sofa to build in the room/will it fit nicely with your other furniture?

  • Quality - Do you own a pet/ spend a lot of time on the couch? Making sure the construction and fabric are durable is important.

  • Comfortability - How many people inhabit the sofa at the same time? Do you want a place to prop up your legs or room to stretch out to take a nap?

  • Style - If you are buying a new sofa to place in an existing room, are you taking into account your other furniture and accessories? Does the sofa compliment the architecture/existing decor in the room?

I am not one to stick to one design style, that can date quickly and can feel kitschy (not in a good way). I enjoy finding a balance between my furnishings and decor, for example pairing a contemporary sofa with a vintage coffee table or vice versa. There’s a lot to consider when making a big purchase like a sofa, but an interior designer can help you maximize your budget while refining your interiors.
